Thrashers Beat Hurricanes 5-2
Marty Reasoner tallied twice and Ilya Kovalchuk picked up a goal and one assist as Atlanta topped Carolina, 5-2, at the RBC Center. Ron Hainsey and Jason Williams also lit the lamp for the Thrashers, who have won four consecutive games. Johan Hedberg was solid in the victory, making 35 saves.
"I think what we tried to do is contain them and keep them to the outside, and protect the middle of the ice," said Atlanta head coach John Anderson. "We get a goal here or two from our third or fourth line, Reasoner and Williams, instead of a one-goal game, it's three."
Rod Brind'Amour and Ray Whitney scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost two of three. Cam Ward took the loss after allowing five goals on only 22 shots.
Carolina dominated a scoreless first period in stretches, taking a 15-10 shot advantage. The floodgates opened in the second period with a six-goal flurry that saw Atlanta emerge with a two-goal advantage.
Brind'Amour gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 1:32, taking a lead pass from Sergei Samsonov and stuffing one past Hedberg, but Reasoner countered for the Thrashers at 3:36. Carolina went up 2-1 a little more than two minutes later as Whitney potted his fourth of the season on a breakaway but the visitors struck back with three in a row to go up 4-2.
Defenseman Hainsey scored with a long shot from the left point just past the midway point of the period, then Williams beat Ward with a wrister into the top-right corner at 15:02. Kovalchuk capped the burst at 18:23 with his sixth of the season and first in three games, slamming home Williams' cross-crease dish.
Reasoner's second of the game at 6:03 increased Atlanta's lead to 5-2 and the visitors had to survive a pair of shorthanded situations in the last half of the third period to skate away with a surprise road win.
"I think the attack on the offense was a bit slow and sluggish," said Carolina head coach Peter Laviolette. "I think it happens to every team. "We talked about energy, and it wasn't where it needed to be tonight."
