Amare Stoudemire poured in 49 points to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 113-103 victory over the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Stoudemire fell one point shy of his career-high in hitting a remarkable 17- of-21 shots from the field and 15-of-15 from the free throw line, while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. The 25-year-old also doled out six assists, had a game-high five steals and swatted two shots. "I worked to dominate from the start," Stoudemire said. "I took it upon myself to go out there and get guys involved and just to dominate offensively and defensively. I took it upon myself to give us a spark."
Boris Diaw was the second leading Suns scorer with 14 points for Phoenix, which will take its three-game winning streak to Chicago and Milwaukee later this week in finishing off a four-game road trip. The Suns have won four of five to open the season. Danny Granger and T.J. Ford netted 23 points each for Indiana, which has lost two of three to start the season. Troy Murphy posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while Marquis Daniels chipped in with 19 points.
Phoenix cut the deficit to seven at the half and opened the third with a red- hot Stoudemire going 5-for-5 from the field and hitting all four of his foul shots.
A Leandro Barbosa three-ball with 1:41 remaining in the third gave Phoenix its first lead since getting the opening bucket. That was part of a 14-0 run by the Suns to end the third quarter with a 90-84 lead.
"We couldn't get a handle on it (the game) and struggled in the third," Granger said. "We should have and could have won the game. We had lapses and it costs you. We got away from our system and it cost us the game."
A Stoudemire dunk and layup by Diaw with under two minutes remaining made it a 107-100 game and the Suns made 6-of-8 foul shots down the stretch, including 4-of-4 from Stoudemire, to ice the win.
Indiana controlled the first half from the outset and finished off the opening quarter with a layup from Travis Diener and Jarrett Jack jumper at the buzzer to put the Pacers up 38-27. Indiana held a 66-59 halftime lead.
