Starace Upsets Safin in Sweden
Potito Starace defeated Wimbledon semfinalist Marat Safin 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open.
Safin, playing in the event for the first time since 1998, won their only previous meeting at the 2004 French Open.
Qualifier Bjorn Rehnquist of Sweden also advanced to the quarterfinals of the clay-court tournament, defeating wild-card entrant Michael Ryderstedt 6-3, 7-5.
Rehnquist won only his fourth match on the ATP Tour since 1996. He was the last Swede to win a Grand Slam junior title when he captured the 1996 Australian Open.
"This feels better than my success in Australia,'' said Rehnquist, a 30-year-old ranked 226th in the world.
Next up for Rehnquist is last year's finalist, Fernando Verdasco, who advanced when Swedish wild-card Ervin Eleskovic retired in the second set because of injury while trailing 6-0, 4-2.
Starace will play either Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic or Thomas Johansson of Sweden. They were to play during the evening session.
