The Ottawa Senators are close to re-signing captain Daniel Alfredsson to a contract that could keep him a Senator for the remainder of his career. The Senators and Alfredsson's agent, JP Barry are still working on the language and final details of what is described as a very complicated four-year contract extension.

The extension will pay the veteran forward as much as $22 million over the term, with the first two years of the agreement expected to be much higher than the final year to make the cap hit more team friendly.

The two sides aggressively started negotiating last Friday and have been working through the legalties of bridging his pre-lockout contract - which contains option years - with a new deal which will be much cleaner.

To address the options, it's believed the first two years of this new contract will include a hefty payment, attached to the annual salary from his extension. The contract will also include a no-movement clause, almost ensuring Alfredsson will retire as an Ottawa Senator.
