Selanne Deal Awaits Decision by Sundin
Teemu Selanne's decision to play this season remains on hold, thanks in part to the Mats Sundin's situation.
Selanne likely will return to the Anaheim Ducks, but the team must clear salary cap space to sign him. A key part of that equation is the fate of defenseman Mathieu Schneider. The Ducks likely will trade Schneider, who is scheduled to make $5.5 million this season, but potential suitors are awaiting Sundin's decision.
Sundin, the former Toronto Maple Leafs captain, like Selanne is an unrestricted free agent. Several teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, are interested in signing Sundin -- if he decides to play this season.
So Selanne waits while Schneider waits while Sundin makes up his mind about the 2008-09 season.
Selanne announced his retirement after the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007, but decided to return to the team late last season.
At 38, Selanne has potential to be a first- or second-line right winger for the Ducks. He played in 26 games after returning to Anaheim last season, finishing with 12 goals and 11 assists.
