Ronnie O’Brien scored two goals to lead the resurgent San Jose Earthquakes to a 4-0 rout of the New England Revolution on Saturday.
Joe Cannon posted his seventh shutout of the season - and 63rd career - by making six saves for San Jose, which has won two straight for the first time this season.
“We are obviously very happy with the win,” Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said. “The team has been building to a good performance and a lot of goals and it is good to finally get it, especially against a very good team. It’s one game but I am very pleased with the guys tonight.
After applying some early pressure on goalkeeper Matt Reis, San Jose broke through in the 11th minute as O’Brien received a pass on the right side of the box from Francisco Lima that he converted inside the left goalpost.
In the 54th minute, New England had to make a rare substitution for Reis, who left with an abductor strain. Doug Warren appeared in his stead but did not fare well, allowing three second-half tallies.
Ryan Johnson doubled the lead in the 71st minute. A passing volley from O’Brien to Scott Sealy found its way over to Johnson, who fired it into the net.
Only four minutes later, San Jose’s offense put another strong goal on the board as Darren Huckerby crossed the ball through traffic over to Sealy.
Sealy appeared to be offside, but no call was made and he took advantage, easily lifting the ball past Warren for the tally.
“I didn’t score the first few games, but I felt like I was contributing and playing well,” Sealy said. “Tonight, the goal came for me. Darren gave me a great pass and I just had to finish.”
O’Brien shattered the Earthquakes’ previous season high for goals in a game in the 87th minute as he lifted a left-footed kick from the right side just out of the reach of Reis for a 4-0 advantage.
“New England put it to us back there earlier this year, so it was good to come out and show that we are a good side,” O’Brien said, referring to the Revolution’s 2-0 win over San Jose on May 17.
“Hopefully, this win will get us started so we can make a push for the playoffs. We played well tonight and we need to continue this next week against Chivas.”
Reis and Warren combined to turn away five shots for the Revolution.
“We’re not tired,” Revolution coach Steve Nicol said. “We just didn’t take our chances in the game. We started off poorly and it was hard to pick up. We didn’t have the ability and strength on the field to do a better job in the end.”
