Rubens Barrichello won a charity karting event in Brazil on Sunday, beating drivers including Felipe Massa, Michael Schumacher and Jeff Gordon. Barrichello edged Brazilian countryman Lucas Di Grassi in the first race of the "International Challenge of the Stars," then finished fifth in the second to clinch the overall title with 36 points. In its 4th edition, the event organized by Massa in southern Brazil will aid local charities and the victims of recent flooding in the region.
Massa, the runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in this year's Formula One championship, won the second 25-minute race in the Kartodromo dos Ingleses track in Florianopolis, finishing 3rd overall with 31 points. Di Grassi ended one point behind Barrichello after a 3rd place in the last race.
Barrichello and Di Grassi are two of the drivers fighting for a spot in Honda's F1 team next year. Barrichello raced with Honda this year, while Di Grassi was a test driver for Renault. "Can we quickly send this tape to Honda?" Barrichello told Globo TV after the 1st race.
Barrichello later complained of Di Grassi's aggressive style during the races. "Everybody wants to win this," Barrichello said. "But we can't go around hitting other people on the track, this is a charity event."
Schumacher, a 7-time F1 champion who is participating in the event for the 2nd straight year, retired from the 2nd race and was 4th in the 1st after recovering from a spin that took him out of contention. He finished eighth overall. The German driver, who won the event last year, collided with his former Ferrari teammate Barrichello after losing control of his kart.
Barrichello also complained about Schumacher's driving. "It seemed like Schumacher thought he was in a war," Barrichello said. "Maybe he forgot that he is in Brazil now."
Gordon, a 4-time NASCAR champion making his 1st trip to race in Brazil, struggled after starting in 25th place and failed to complete the 1st race because of mechanical problems. He also did not finish the 2nd race. Gordon told local media it was all "too new" for him, but that it was "fantastic to see the guys" fighting each other for position throughout the races. Massa finished 5th in the first race.
Other drivers participating included Indy Racing League's Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira, former MotoGP racer Alex Barros and F1 test drivers Luca Badoer, and Vitantonio Liuzzi.
