Purdue Beats Michigan State 72-54

JaJuan Johnson scored 17 points and E'Twaun Moore added 13 points and six rebounds, as No. 19 Purdue manhandled sixth-ranked Michigan State, 72-54, in Big Ten conference action from Mackey Arena.

Robbie Hummel, ailing all season with a balky back among other injuries, played through the pain to the tune of 11 points. Purdue (20-6, 9-4 Big Ten) also received nine points from Keaton Grant, and seven points and six rebounds from Lewis Jackson.

The Boilermakers have won three straight.

"I was proud of our guys. We were fortunate to start the (second) half on a good note," said Purdue head coach Matt Painter.

Raymar Morgan, one of Michigan State's big stars, played sick and scored just three points on 1-of-5 shooting. The rest of the Spartans played with the same lack of energy. Kalin Lucas scored a team-best 14 points, but turned the basketball over six times, and Durrell Summers added 11 points and six boards. Goran Suton chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (20-5, 10-3), who now hold a tenuous lead in the conference race.

"It was a meltdown on our part. You can't feel good about that kind of performance in a big game like this," said Spartans head coach Tom Izzo.

Michigan State, shooting poorly and barely hanging by a thread through 20 minutes, didn't stay close for very long in the opening minutes of the second half. The first seven points, capped by Moore's long-distance jumper, belonged to the Boilermakers, handing the home-standing club a 33-23 lead.

After a few minutes of back-and-forth action, Johnson drained two free throws and Marcus Green's bucket opened a 45-30 edge. The advantage grew as large as 48-32 on Grant's three with 12:34 to go in the contest.

The Spartans followed with six points in succession, but a lack of scoring firepower never got them over the top. Purdue raced back out to a 14-point edge at 59-45 with under eight minutes to go on a Johnson jumper, and Michigan State never threatened the rest of the way.

Michigan State shot just 26.7 percent in the first half, and despite nine points from Hummel, trailed by just a 26-23 margin.
