Phil Mickelson's Ace Lifts Him Back into Contention
Phil Mickelson shot a hole in one Friday to stay in contention at the Scottish Open with a second-round 67.
The American used a 5-iron at Loch Lomond for the 190-yard 5th. The ball went straight at the pin, hit 12 feet short, bounced once and rolled into the hole.
"I thought it would be close and, all of a sudden, everybody was jumping behind the green," Mickelson said. "I don't remember the last one. It has been a little while."
Mickelson said it was between his 15th and 20th ace as a professional.
Mickelson followed with a birdie at the next hole - where his 20-foot eagle attempt just missed - and another at the last from 10 feet to end with a 4-under total of 138.
Ernie Els also made progress, his seven birdies masking two bogeys and a weak finish in a 66.
"I'm not striking it 100 percent," the South African said. "You could see that in my finish. Missed the fairway on seven and three-putted there, then had to make great up-and-downs at 8 and 9."
Els, like Mickelson, started at the 10th.
"There was some good stuff here and there. It was nice to see some putts going in because I haven't putted well all year," Els said.
The highlight was a curling 35-footer for birdie at the 2nd hole.
Irishman Damien McGrane, winner of the China Open in April, shot a 5-under 66 to hold the lead on 8-under, one clear of a group including Thomas Bjorn, who won this tournament when it was first held here in 1996.
Bjorn was on 7-under after a 68, level with former British Open champion Paul Lawrie.
Of the two overnight leaders, Thongchai Jaidee had not started and Alexander Noren ended the round at 5-under.
