DeAngelo Williams rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown, leading the Carolina Panthers to a 17-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
Williams accounted for most of the team's offense, as the team managed just 219 yards. Julius Peppers dominated on defense, recording three sacks and two forced fumbles for the Panthers (7-2), who have won seven of their first nine games for the third time in team history and the first time since 2005.
Jake Delhomme struggled for most of the game, completing just 7-of-27 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, tying a career-high with four interceptions. Muhsin Muhammad caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.
Andrew Walter started at quarterback for the Raiders in place of JaMarcus Russell, who was listed as the team's emergency third quarterback after being limited in practice this week with a knee injury. Walter went 14-of-32 passing for 143 yards and two interceptions. Justin Fargas ran for 89 yards on 22 carries for Oakland (2-7), which has lost three straight games.
"This is a tale of too many penalties, particularly on offense," Raiders head coach Tom Cable said. "(On) first and second down (we) moved the ball very well, but on third-and-short, penalties would give us third-and-long. To beat a team like Carolina, you can't have 10 penalties. It was just too much to overcome. We aren't there yet. We'll just keep working our tail off to score touchdowns."
The teams combined to turn the ball over seven times while punting a total of 20 times in the game. The Panthers converted only 3-of-13 third down chances, while the Raiders were a putrid 2-for-17.
Oakland fumbled the opening kickoff, and Carolina started with the ball on the Raiders' 16. It didn't take long to find the end zone, as Delhomme connected with Muhammad from three yards out for an early lead.
An interception midway through the first put the Raiders on Carolina's 39. Walter drove the offense down to the 16 but threw a pick in the end zone to neutralize the threat.
With the second quarter winding down, Williams more than doubled Carolina's offensive output on one play. The Panthers had 53 total yards at the start of the drive on their own 31, and Williams broke multiple tackles on a 69-yard touchdown run right up the middle to go up 14-0 with three minutes left in the half.
After an interception to open up the second half, Oakland had good field position on Carolina's 25. Sebastian Janikowski nailed a 38-yard field goal to put the Raiders on the board 1:35 into the quarter.
The field goal marked the first time Oakland scored since the 36-second mark of the third quarter in the team's game against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. The Raiders were shut out by Atlanta, 24-0, last week and went a total of 107:04 without scoring a point.
Another interception -- the team's fourth -- gave the Raiders the ball at the Panthers' 32 about five minutes into the third. Janikowski added a 45-yard field goal to bring the team within eight.
John Kasay hit a 32-yard field goal with 1:49 to play, extending the lead to 11 to seal the victory for the Panthers.
