Vince Carter scored 21 points and had six assists, leading New Jersey to a 95-85 win over Washington in the season opener for both teams.
Chinese star Yi Jianlian, acquired via a trade in the offseason from Milwaukee, added 17 points and six boards for the Nets. Jarvis Hayes had 14 points and Devin Harris added 13 in the win.
DeShawn Stevenson and Antawn Jamison each scored 14 points for the Wizards, who opened the season without the injured Gilbert Arenas. Caron Butler had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in defeat.
Thanks to off-season trades, free agent additions and three picks in the 2008 draft, New Jersey drastically altered its look for this season. Only three current players - Josh Boone, Carter and Sean Williams - remain from last season's opening day roster.
The face of the franchise, venerable point guard Jason Kidd, was traded to Dallas prior to the trade deadline last season and high-scoring forward Richard Jefferson followed in the offseason, moving to Milwaukee in a deal that netted Yi and Bobby Simmons.
For the Wizards, it was a rough start to the season with Arenas out indefinitely after a third knee operation in the last 1 1/2 years. Center Brendan Haywood could also miss the rest of the season after wrist surgery.
One free throw from Jamison gave the Wizards a 75-74 edge with 8:17 remaining in the game, but the Nets scored the ensuing six points. Hayes had a pair of buckets, including a fadeaway jumper to cap the spurt, and Yi added an emphatic jam.
Butler's one foul shot had Washington within 86-82 with 3:08 left, but Harris nailed a jumper just over a minute later. Harris then stole the ball from Butler and Carter put the finishing touches on the win, drilling a jumper from the right baseline for a 90-82 cushion with 1:01 remaining.
The game was tied at 23 after the opening quarter, but back-to-back three- pointers from Stevenson and Jamison boosted the Wizards to a 44-39 lead with 2 1/2 minutes left in the half. The home team led, 46-44, at the break.
The Nets went on an 11-4 spurt to start the third quarter, but it remained tight going into the fourth for a 69-67 New Jersey edge, thanks to a Keyon Dooling layup in the final seconds.
