Memphis Beats SMU 90-47
Shawn Taggart scored 19 points to lead No.5 Memphis in a 90-47 rout of SMU, giving the Tigers their 53rd straight conference win.
Doneal Mack shot 4-of-8 from three-point range en route to 15 points for the Tigers (23-3, 11-0 Conference USA), who have won 17 straight games overall.
Robert Dozier donated 14 points, six rebounds and three assists while Tyreke Evans and Antonio Anderson had 13 points each for Memphis, which saw all five starters reach double figures.
Paul McCoy totaled 17 points for the Mustangs (7-17, 1-10), who have lost three in a row and eight of nine overall. Derek Williams added 11 points in defeat.
The score stayed close in the first half until Mack's three-pointer sparked a 15-2 Memphis run. Willie Kemp's layup and Dozier's free throw closed it out for a 30-19 Tigers advantage with 7:36 left before the break.
"We're really getting better defensively," said Memphis head coach John Calipari. "They, for 10 minutes, were right there hanging around making shots. They made six out of eight threes and shot 45 percent in the first half. For the game, they shot 30 percent. Again, it's hard to do it for 30 or 40 minutes against us."
Memphis kept pushing and opened a 52-33 lead at halftime.
"Well, obviously, they're a very good team and they can make a lot of people look bad," said SMU head coach Matt Doherty. "And, we were able to fight that for a while, but...the last five or six minutes of the first half, they just took it to another level, and we just weren't able to respond."
Taggart had a three-point play before Dozier and Evans hit jumpers to start the second half, giving Memphis a 59-33 lead 2:11 into the frame.
Seven points from Taggart and five from Anderson completed a 12-0 run that gave the Tigers an 83-44 lead with 5:09 left, and the outcome was never in doubt from there.
