Memphis Beats Houston 69-60

Tyreke Evans finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, as fifth-ranked Memphis held on to beat Houston, 69-60, to move another step closer to a perfect Conference USA season.

The Tigers (27-3, 15-0 C-USA) extended their winning streak to 21 games -- the longest in the nation -- and can wrap up a third consecutive undefeated conference season with a win Saturday against Tulane.

Robert Dozier added 15 points, while Shawn Taggart provided 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win for Memphis, which has already clinched its fourth straight outright C-USA regular-season title and the top seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Aubrey Coleman had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Houston (18-10, 9-6), which has lost three of five. Qa'rraan Calhoun and Kelvin Lewis added 15 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cougars.

Trailing by six at halftime, Houston managed to even the game shortly into the second half. Coleman's jumper, followed by a Calhoun three-pointer, made it a 42-42 game a little over five minutes in.

Memphis scored the next six points, but Houston tied the game again. Coleman's free throw, Marcus Cousin's pair from the line and another triple from Calhoun knotted the contest at 48 just past the midway point of the half.

After the teams traded baskets, the Tigers scored nine consecutive points in a pivotal stretch. Dozier had two layups in the run, the second one being a three-point play to end it, putting Memphis ahead 59-50 with about 5 1/2 minutes left.

Houston got within 63-58 on consecutive buckets from Lewis and Calhoun with a little over two minutes to go, but Memphis made 6-of-6 free throw attempts from there to seal the win.

Memphis began the game on an 11-2 run, and went ahead 21-9 after a Wesley Witherspoon dunk just past the midway point of the first half.

But Houston countered with the next six points to get within 21-15. After Memphis swelled its lead to 30-17 later in the half, the Cougars came back again, this time with an eight-point burst. The first five points came from Lewis, while Desmond Wade followed with a three-pointer to make it a 30-25 game.

The teams traded baskets for the remaining three minutes of the half, and Evans' jumper gave Memphis a 37-31 lead at the break.
