Maple Leafs Closer to Trading Bryan McCabe
The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be closer to trading away defenseman Bryan McCabe.
In fact, the team has a deal in place to ship McCabe to the Florida Panthers, according the Canadian all-sports site TSN.ca. The package doesn't include the Panthers' best defenseman, Jay Bouwmeester. But it is believed a second Leafs player will be involved in the deal.
The Leafs apparently persuaded McCabe to waive his no-movement clause. That had been a sticking point for months. The deal is believed to be hanging on McCabe's demand the Leafs, not the Panthers, pay a $2 million signing bonus due Sept. 1.
McCabe has three years left on his five-year, $28.75 million deal.
The Panthers could be forced to trade Bouwmeester, 24, their franchise defenseman, because of a lingering contract dispute.
Bouwmeester's one-year deal is for $4.875 million. He signed it this summer to avoid arbitration. However, the Panthers would have preferred a long-term deal. They likely will keep talking to Bouwmeester, but he can't sign a new deal until after Jan. 1.
The catch? Bouwmeester appears to be set on leaving the Panthers after this season. Thus, the team could be interested in McCabe as their top defenseman.
The Panthers acquired enforcer Wade Belak and winger Chad Kilger from the Leafs at the February trade deadline. Belak re-signed in the offseason. Kilger has yet to report and likely won't play next season. The Panthers gave up a third-round pick to get him.
