Lava Man Owners Mulling Potential Retirement
Thoroughbred racing's richest claiming horse hasn't won in over a year.
Lava Man may have raced for the last time, with his owners planning a decision soon on the future of thoroughbred racing’s richest claiming horse who hasn’t won in more than a year.
Lava Man finished last among six horses in Sunday’s $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap on the turf at Del Mar.
“We’ll huddle up and decide to do what’s best for the horse,” said Steve Kenley of STD Stable, which owns Lava Man along with Jason Wood.
Lava Man has won $5.2 million since being claimed by his current owners for $50,000 at Del Mar in 2004. But he hasn’t visited the winner’s circle since capturing his third straight Hollywood Gold Cup on June 30, 2007 — six races ago.
The 7-year-old gelding has 17 wins in 46 career starts.
“We have nothing but appreciation for this horse,” Kenley said. “It’s been quite a ride for four years. He’s been in the spotlight and he’s put us on the map.”
