Kyle Busch Wins 10th Nationwide Series

Kyle Busch scored his record-tying 10th Nationwide Series victory of the season Saturday at the Texas Motor Speedway. The No.18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver led 174 of 200 laps and held off a hard-charging Carl Edwards in the final laps to tie Sam Ard's 1983 series record for most wins in a season. The victory was also Busch's 21st for his career, placing him in a tie with Dale Earnhardt and Harry Gant for all-time series wins.

Ard, a two-time series champion (1983-84), suffers from Alzheimer's disease and has experienced financial troubles as a result of his medical difficulties. Busch said he plans to donate $100,000 towards his healthcare costs. "Sam Ard is one of the pioneers of this sport and one of the guys who built this deal," Busch said. "To be tied with him in 10 wins, that's pretty spectacular and really special to me..I told myself during this race that he had health issues, so I am going to go ahead and give him $100,000. I am going to try and help him out some and see what I can do. It's not much, but it's something that can try to help him and everything he's going through."

Busch also recorded his 21st victory in NASCAR's three national touring series this year, including eight victories in the Sprint Cup Series and three in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Meanwhile, Edwards second-place finish allowed him to move from within 116 points to 91 of leader Clint Bowyer with just Phoenix and Homestead remaining on the schedule. Bowyer finished sixth. "Twenty five points, that's close to the average that we need," Edwards said, "On a day like this when I believe Clint's car was a little bit better than ours, we got him with that (pit) call and a little bit of traffic there at the end. That's a great day for us. We'll keep our heads up and go to Phoenix and hopefully close in some more."

Edwards started on the pole, but Kevin Harvick quickly moved around Edwards and claimed the top spot on the opening lap. Harvick ran out in front for 22 circuits before Busch took command.

After starting in the middle of the pack in 21st, Bowyer knifed his way through the field as he moved into the top-10 within the first 15 laps, moving up to fifth by Lap 40.

Donnie Neuenberger made contact with the wall on the front stretch on Lap 50 for the first caution. Busch retained his lead after he was the quickest off of pit road. Meanwhile, Sprint Cup regular Brian Vickers sustained a broken rear axle on his Toyota during his stop and had to call it a day shortly after the incident. "We've got a great and fast race car, but unfortunately we broke a part," Vickers said. "We kind of beat ourselves, and it's been our trend. We got to fix that before next season, and I know we will."

Bowyer continued his charge towards the front as he passed Edwards for the second position on Lap 80. Bowyer, however, ran 3 1/2 seconds behind Busch.

Harvick ran among the top-five before he began a round of green-flag stops on Lap 110. But four laps later, the caution flag waved when Robert Richardson, Jr. stalled on the track, and Harvick ended up going a lap down in 13th as a result.

Busch once again was the fastest off of pit road and led the field for the restart on Lap 120.

The third caution for debris on Lap 150 set up another round of stop with Busch coming out ahead of teammate Joey Logano and Roush Fenway Racing drivers David Ragan and Edwards. Harvick moved back on the lead during the caution. But Harvick suffered a broken splitter in the closing stages and fell six laps behind while his car was repaired. He ended up finishing 29th.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin made contact with 21 laps to go, sending Montoya into the infield grass. Busch took on four new tires and exited the pits first again, while Mark Martin, with just two fresh tires on his car, moved up four positions into second.

Justin Allgaier spun in the closing laps to set up a seven-lap shootout to the finish. Edwards charged from fifth to second in the closing laps but did not have enough time to catch Busch at the end. "Man, I needed about two more laps," Edwards said. "We got four tires, but there was no chance we were going to catch Kyle on the same tires he had. That was my chance there, but I just couldn't get to him. I needed two more laps."

Martin, Logano and Ragan completed the top-five. The second-to-last race of the season is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, at the Phoenix International Raceway.
