Juventus Beats Reggina 4-0

Juventus scored 2 goals in each half to defeat Reggina 4-0 in Serie A play Saturday. Mauro Camoranesi, who has battled muscle injuries for most of the season, scored his 1st goal of the year in the 28th to give Juventus the early lead. Alessandro Del Piero helped set up the goal by drawing three defenders before sending a no-look pass with his heel to Pavel Nedved, who found Camoranesi unmarked in front of the Reggina net.

"There are moments in the season when you create a lot of chances and don't score, tonight it was just the opposite for us as we converted everything," Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said.

Amauri scored his 7th goal of the season to double the lead in the 44th, before defender Giorgio Chiellini made it 3-0 in the 62nd by heading in a long cross from close range.

Del Piero completed the rout under driving snow from the penalty spot in the 74th, his 250th career goal with Juventus and 50th penalty. "It's great to get new records and reach milestones, but the most important thing is to win," Del Piero said. "Tonight we had to win and that's what we did."

The win gives Juventus 27 points and puts the Turin-based club 3 behind 1st-place Inter Milan, which hosts Napoli Sunday. Napoli has 24 points and can pull even with Juventus again with a win over Inter. AC Milan is also on 27 points and plays Palermo on Sunday. "Inter remains the favourite, they are the defending champions and should win again this year," Ranieri said. "I've said that from the beginning of the season to everybody from the president of the team to the janitor. Our goal is to improve on last year."

Juventus finished 3rd last season, 13 points behind Inter after playing the previous year in Serie B because of its role in the Italian match-fixing scandal.

Reggina has the worst defense in Serie A with 28 goals given up so far, including three 3-0 losses and two 4-0 defeats. However, the club had won its last 2 games before coming to Stadio Olimpico. "Clearly we have something wrong with our concentration if we lose games by this much," said Reggina coach Nevio Orlandi. "When we fall behind on the road like today we need to keep concentrated, it's clearly a psychological thing."

In Catania, Jose Castillo scored a minute after coming on as a 2nd-half substitute to give Lecce a 1-1 draw at Catania. Castillo knocked in a rebound in the 69th minute for his 3rd goal of the season. Michele Paolucci had put Catania ahead in the 61st after hitting the post 10 minutes earlier. Catania has 6 wins, a draw and a loss this year at its Massimino stadium. Away from home, the Sicilian club has 3 draws and three losses. Lecce has not won a game since the end of September, a span of nine games.
