Bayern Munich Beat Schalke 2-1

Defending champion Bayern Munich beat Schalke 2-1 on Sunday to move within a point of the lead in the Bundesliga after Hoffenheim lost 1-0 at Hertha Berlin.

Franck Ribery scored his fourth goal in four games to secure Bayern's win as Juergen Klinsmann's team won its fifth straight. Hoffenheim had its own five-game winning streak stopped by a goal from Andriy Voronin in Berlin to lose the league lead to Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

In the third game Sunday, Stuttgart rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen wasted a 3-0 lead in Karlsruhe on Saturday to draw 3-3 but still led at the end of the 12th round by one goal over Hoffenheim.

Both teams have 25 points and Bayern jumped past Hamburger SV into third with 24. Hamburg has 23 and Hertha moved past Schalke into fifth by beating Hoffenheim, the surprise promoted team that fell to its third defeat of the season

Bayern took the lead in Gelsenkirchen after only three minutes when Luca Toni marked his return from a rib injury to score his first goal in eight games. Mark van Bommel crossed low from the right side and Toni was in the right place to guide the ball inside the post.

Schalke struck back immediately after Heiko Westermann had won the ball from Ze Roberto and Jefferson Farfan finished the move by driving the ball through the legs of Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing in the fifth.

The home team then dominated the first half but wasted several opportunities until Bayern used its second chance to score its second goal in the 31st. Ze Roberto made up for his earlier mistake when he burst through on the left after receiving a pass from Ribery, passed the ball back to the Frenchman, who scored to put Bayern ahead for good.

Westermann wasted a good opportunity for Schalke late in the match but Jose Ernesto Sosa hit the post for Bayern shortly before the final whistle.

Berlin lost top striker Marko Pantelic to a right thigh injury after one hour and Hoffenheim nearly went ahead as the Serb was leaving the pitch. Demba Ba narrowly missed the target, one of the three big opportunities he had in the second half.

Hertha went ahead in the 70th when Hoffenheim failed to clear a corner. Gojko Kacar, Pantelic's replacement, got to the ball, passed it to Maximilian Nico, who fed Voronin and the Ukrainian was left unmarked to score easily.

Nikos Liberopoulos scored two goals to give Eintracht a 2-0 lead, with Martin Fenin playing a role in both. Jens Lehmann parried Fenin's shot in the 18th but Liberopoulos knocked the rebound back into the net. The second, in the 66th, came with the Greek striker heading in Fenin's cross.

Martin Lanig put Stuttgart back into the match with a header from close range and Mario Gomez clinched the draw with another disputed header in the 87th. The goal was first disallowed but the referee allowed it to stand after consulting with the linesman, who ruled that Gomez did not foul one of Frankfurt's defenders.
