Adrian Diaconu Injured During Training
Adrian Diaconu of Montreal has postponed the first defence of his WBC light-heavyweight title due to a hand injury suffered during training, promoter Chris Ganescu said Tuesday.
Diaconu (25-0), who injured his right hand while sparring on Monday, was to have faced 42-year-old Italian Silvio Branco (57-9-3) on Nov. 15 in Bucharest. The bout is postponed indefinitely.
"It's postponed to a date to be announced once we know when he can come back," said Ganescu, reached by telephone at the WBC convention in China. "They tell me that he shouldn't hit the bag for two or three weeks."
It is the second time in as many years that Diaconu has injured the same hand. Last year, the Romanian-born Diaconu was forced to pull out of a title fight with then-WBC champion Chad Dawson.
When he returned, Diaconu defeated Chris Henry in April for the interim belt. He took over the full title when Dawson gave it up to fight IBF champ Antonio Tarver. Dawson defeated Tarver by unanimous decision on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas.
