12/16/2005 11:24:54 PM
TORONTO (CP) - Colour the Sovereign Awards gold this year - as in A Bit O'Gold.
The four-year-old was crowned Horse of the Year, Champion Older Male Horse and Champion Male Turf Horse at Canadian thoroughbred racing's annual awards gala Friday night.
The awards are sponsored by the Jockey Club of Canada.
A Bit O'Gold, who won three races and $597,336 this year, becomes the first horse to follow the three-year-old male Sovereign Award with the older male title since Frost King did it in 1981-82.
And in winning the older male title, A Bit O'Gold dethroned last year's winner Mobil. Cryptograph was the other finalist.
A Bit O'Gold, owned by The Two Bit Racing Stable, beat Mobil again for top male turf horse. The other finalist was Jambalaya, who won the Breeders' Stakes, the third jewel of Canada's Triple Crown.
