Silver Train upsets Lost in the Fog
10/29/2005 3:21:25 PM
NEW YORK (AP) - Longshot Silver Train put an end to Lost in the Fog's undefeated career Saturday in the $1-million US Breeders' Cup Sprint, taking the lead in the stretch and holding off Taste of Paradise to win by a head.
Lost in the Fog, the odds-on favourite who had won 10 straight races by a combined winning margin of 663/4 lengths, faded to finish seventh.
Lost in the Fog, one of several undefeated horses vying for championship honours in the Breeders' Cup, had criss-crossed the U.S. to win at eight different tracks since his career began just over a year ago at Golden Gate near San Francisco.
Silver Train, a three-year-old son of Old Trieste ridden by Edgar Prado, stayed well off a four-way battle for the early lead among Lost in the Fog, Battle Won, Attila's Storm and Wildcat Heir. Prado began moving up on the turn, and the brown colt ran past the fading favourite inside the eighth pole and had enough left to fend off the late charge from Taste of Paradise.
A claim of foul by Garrett Gomez, the rider of Taste of Paradise, against the winner for interference in the stretch was disallowed. Lion Tamer was third.
The winner, trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. for Buckram Oak Farm, ran the six furlongs in 1:08.86, more than a second off the track record of 1:07.66 and the Breeders' Cup record of 1:07.77. It was his third victory in seven starts this year, including a five-length victory in the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park on Sept. 11.
Silver Train returned $25.80, $10.40 and $8.10, while Taste of Paradise paid $10.80 and $7.20. Lion Tamer, under John Velazquez, paid $7.60 to show. Following him under the wire were Attila's Storm, Elusive Jazz, Lifestyle, Lost in the Fog, Imperialism, Gygistar, Wildcat Heir and Battle Won.
