Rock Hard Ten out of Breeders' Cup
10/28/2005 11:38:48 AM
NEW YORK (AP) - Rock Hard Ten, one of the favourites for the Breeders' Cup Classic, was pulled out of the $4.7-million race Friday with a bruised right front foot.
Trainer Richard Mandella told the Breeders' Cup racing office that his four-year-old colt won't run because blood was discovered on the bottom of the foot after Rock Hard Ten galloped 15/8 miles Friday morning.
"Richard was over and scratched Rock Hard Ten because of the injury," said Pam Blatz-Murff, vice-president of Breeders' Cup operations.
Rock Hard Ten, unbeaten in three races this year, was the second favourite behind Saint Liam and a candidate for Horse of the Year.
The colt bruised his left front foot a week ago, but Mandella said that problem was not an issue when Rock Hard Ten arrived at Belmont Park earlier this week.
"He's 100 per cent right now," Mandella said Thursday. "We just hope it continues that way. Bruises can come back and haunt you."
Mandella was not immediately available for comment Friday. The Hall of Fame trainer was not at his barn, and did not return several telephone messages.
Bloodhorse.com first reported the injury. Mandella said on the website "It's just a temporary condition and he'll miss about two weeks of training. I guess it just wasn't meant to be."
