The four-year-old, in the final race of a storied career, was outrun in the Breeders' Cup Distaff by 30-1 longshot Pleasant Home in the biggest upset ever in this race. Ashado finished third as she failed to defend her Distaff title and came up short in her bid to become the No. 1 female earner ever in North America. A first or second place in the 11/8th-mile race for three-year-olds and up would have catapulted Ashado's total past Azeri's winnings of $4,079,820 US. Pleasant Home, with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard, emerged from the 14-horse field off the final turn to take command and claim the top prize of $1,040,000 at Belmont Park. The horse returned a record $63.50 for the stunning performance, which broke a four-race losing streak. "She kicked hard," trainer Shug McGaughey said. Second place went to Society Selection. Yolanda B. Too, a 41-1 longshot co-owned by Sherman Cunningham of Kleinburg, Ont., was close to the lead early in the race, standing second to Capeside Lady. But later on, Yolanda B. Too began to fade badly and wasn't a factor. Ashado, the 2-1 favourite, was running on her favourite track and coming off an Oct. 1 victory in the Beldame here. Before her final appearance, the four-year-old had won four of her six races at Belmont. It was the third Breeders' Cup appearance for Ashado, who will now turn her attention to breeding instead of competing.
