Folklore takes Juvenile Fillies

NEW YORK (AP-CP) - Favoured Folklore stormed to the lead off the final turn Saturday and held off a late charge by Wild Fit to capture the Juvenile Fillies in the first race of the Breeders' Cup.
The victory at Belmont Park was the first Breeders' Cup win for jockey Edgar Prado after 41 unsuccessful rides, and gave trainer D. Wayne Lukas his unprecedented fifth victory in the Juvenile Fillies. Overall, Lukas now boasts 18 Breeders' Cup champions - the most of any trainer.
"It worked out beautifully,'' Prado said. "Wayne gave me exact instructions to come running out of the gate but give her a little breather on the backside. She ran a good race.''
Folklore grabbed the early lead out of the inside post position, battling Canadian horse Knights Templar as they headed for the stretch in the 1 1/16th-mile race. Folklore then charged to the front once more, hitting the finish line 1¼ lengths ahead of the fast closing Wild Fit.
Knights Templar actually surged to the lead shortly after a quarter mile. But Knights Templar, based at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack and trained by Toronto's Dan Vella, faded badly at the turn and finished well back.
Knights Templar came into the race with three wins and a second-place finish in six career starts with earnings of $304,117.
Original Spin, ridden by Jerry Bailey, finished third.
The victory evened Folklore's record against challenger Adieu at two wins apiece for the two-year-olds. Adieu had twice defeated Folklore in three previous meetings this year.
Adieu faded and wound up finishing seventh in the 10-horse field as trainer Todd Pletcher's first of eight mounts Saturday.
Folklore finished the race in 1:43.85, paying $6.70, $4.20 and $2.70.
