Brother Derek favorite in Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) - Brother Derek will have to overcome history and what figures to be a long journey to reach the winner's circle in the 132nd Kentucky Derby.
Brother Derek headlines the field for the first jewel of the Triple Crown that will be run Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Despite the unfavorable 18th post in the 1 1/4-mile race that features a full field of 20 horses and a $2.2 million purse, Brother Derek has been tabbed the 3-1 morning-line favorite. Only one horse has won the Derby from the 18th post - Gato Del Sol in 1982.
"How can I complain about my post?" said Dan Hendricks, the trainer of Brother Derek. "We're here. This is the greatest race in the world. And the 18 is not too bad the way the speed is set up in the race."
Brother Derek, who is coming off a win in the Santa Anita Derby and is 3-for-3 this year, will attempt to become the first California bred to win the Kentucky Derby since Decidedly in 1962.
Ridden by Alex Solis, Brother Derek had his way by going to the front and staying there against smaller fields in California. However, he finished fourth from the 13th post in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in October.
If Brother Derek is able to reach the winner's circle, it would be a special moment for Hendricks, who is paralyzed from the waist down due to a motocross accident in 2004.
Behind Brother Derek, the next contenders are the undefeated Barbaro and Lawyer Ron, who both are listed at 4-1 on the morning line.
Having gone 5-for-5 in his career and coming off a win in the Florida Derby, Barbaro drew the eighth post and will have Edgar Prado in the irons. Barbaro is trained by Michael Matz.
Lawyer Ron, who captured the Arkansas Derby in April and enters on six-race winning streak, will break from the 17th post with John McKee in the saddle. He is trained by Bob Holthus.
The fourth choice at 10-1 is Sweetnorthernsaint, who won the Illinois Derby. Two-time Derby-winning jockey Kent Desormeaux will be in the irons for the Sweetnorthernsaint.
Seeking his fourth Derby win, trainer Bob Baffert will send out Wood Memorial winner Bob and John (12-1), Blue Grass Stakes winner Sinister Minister (12-1) and Santa Anita runner-up Point Determined (12-1).
Trainer John Shirreffs will be looking for a repeat after winning last year with 50-1 longshot Giacomo. This year, Shirreffs sends out A.P. Warrior, who has odds of 15-1 on the morning line.
Barclay Tagg also has a trained a Derby winner, with that coming with Funny Cide in 2003. Tagg sends out Lexington Stakes winner Showing Up, who is 20-1.
Hall of Fame trainers D. Wayne Lukas - a four-time winner - and Nick Zito - a two-time winner who sent out five entries last year - will be absent from this year's event.
Also entered are Sharp Humor (20-1), Jazil (30-1), Steppenwolfer (30-1), Keyed Entry (30-1), Bluegrass Cat (30-1), Deputy Glitters (50-1), Seaside Retreat (50-1), Cause to Believe (50-1), Storm Treasure (50-1) and Flashy Bull (50-1).
