Afleet Alex won't race until 2006

NEW YORK (AP) - Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex hasn't fully recovered from an ankle injury, and won't race again until next year.
Trainer Tim Ritchey said recent X-rays revealed a fracture still exists in the colt's left front ankle.
''It's not 100 per cent healed,'' Ritchey said. ''It's better than previous X-rays, but there's still a small area there.''
Afleet Alex had surgery in July to repair the fracture. The three-year-old colt hasn't raced since winning the Belmont on June 11, and was shipped to Delaware Park from Belmont Park on Thursday. Ritchey said Saturday that his horse won't train for a month, then will be shipped to Gulfstream Park for the winter.
Before the latest X-rays, Ritchey had hoped Afleet Alex would run in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Nov. 26. Among the races being considered for Afleet Alex's four-year-old debut are the Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita on Jan. 28 and the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream on Feb. 4.
