Many of the world's best players play in the NBA, and the overall standard of the competition is considerably higher than any other professional competition. Players in other nations looking to jumpstart their career often join NBA teams in the hope of becoming a star player and gaining international exposure. Three in the Key: Exchanging Gifts
With Christmas right around the corner, several league GM's must be salivating at the possibility of what they might have to unwrap on the 25th.

Well, to be more specific, several league GM's are no doubt salivating at the multitude of players that are likely to be available at, or below, cost as struggling rosters attempt to find the balance they'll need to take themselves to the next level. Now, I'm not talking about perennial trade-rumor victims like Kevin Garnett and Allen Iverson, because nabbing them would cost any team dearly to get them, if for no other reason than because of their enormous contracts. No, I'm talking about the guys that a team would normally be loathe to part with, yet because of the realities of team-building, as well as the realities of the salary cap and luxury tax, may be forced to, which could make for a very interesting December, and beyond. Two teams who may be forced to deal, for very different reasons, are the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. The Celtics find themselves in year three of their youth movement, and there is no doubt that it is not working. GM Danny Ainge has recently insisted that he is not going to pull the trigger prematurely on a move that will see him part with any of his youth before he knows exactly what he'd be giving up. The problem is, as it has been for a couple of years now, that so many of the young players play similar games and there is no way to give each and every one a fair and consistent shot to find themselves as NBA players. This is especially true since so many of them have come right out of high school and are players who need years to develop their skills, years that Paul Pierce doesn't have, and these are players who need veterans to lean on in their development, veterans that the Celtics don't have. What all this amounts to is a need for an influx of quality veteran talent to replace some of the youth on the roster, and to give the roster as a whole some balance while giving Pierce a shot to win while he still has all his talents at this disposal. The problem for Ainge, though, is that he doesn't want to be caught with egg on his face should one or more of the players he unloads turns out to be a star that he gave up on too early like Joe Johnson wound up being. This is an understandable fear, but what are the alternatives? Sabotage the futures of all of your young players who don't get sufficient playing time or guidance? Risk losing a few outright in free agency? Let's be honest here, guys like Kendrick Perkins, Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Delonte West, Rajon Rondo, Sebastian Telfair and Gerald Green aren't the kind of guys you want to give up on, but at the same time none of them have been able to consistently demonstrate that they are imperative to the team's future. They've had to split minutes with each other in an attempt to give each a fair shake out on the court, which keeps all of them from making any real headway as players. I'm really not interested in supposing who might be the ones to get replaced, or who might replace them, since it would just be idle speculation, but from a personal viewpoint, Gomes, West and Green look to be pretty hard pieces to part with. The other squad, Chicago, has a different problem on its hands that will ultimately have to be solved the same way. Chicago has a collection of wonderfully talented, and proven, talent like Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng and Andres Nocioni, and they've been joined this season by promising rookies Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha. The problem is that this team that was supposed to be in a position to make a run at a title has looked vulnerable early in the season and still has issues scoring the ball consistently, especially in the paint. They've got an enviable stable of shooters on their squad, and when all of the pieces mesh together with Ben Wallace they'll once again be a potent defensive squad, but that has been the case for years with the Bulls, and it's time for them to take a step forward. The added pressure of their situation is the upcoming offseason where Gordon, Deng and Nocioni are all going to be looking for contract extensions. While P.J. Brown coming off of the books will help pay for the large salary increase Hinrich signed this fall, the Bulls are still looking at a large payout for three guys who are all deserving of a fair bit of the Bulls cap. It helps that Hinrich and Wallace both signed front-loaded contracts, meaning they get the bulk of their money upfront, so by the time these other extensions kick in it wont be so hard on the team's cap, but the question then becomes; is this the core of players that is going to take the Bulls to the Finals? It's a legitimate question to be asking since signing those three players will essentially prevent the Bulls from adding any more pieces outside of a trade, and increased salaries will make it harder for the Bulls to get the best value for these players, since a 1-year, $4 million contract looks a lot more appetizing to a potential trading partner than a 4-year, $40 million one. Which, finally, brings us back to the point that this might well end up being the best time to try and move one of these players to plug one or two of the holes that clearly still exist on this roster. It seems fairly inevitable that Deng or Nocioni would have to be moved in any potential deal since neither one can slide over to the power forward slot and be a post-scorer, and the alternative to that is one of them has to come off of the bench. However, if the Bulls were content with that arrangement then Gordon would be the one to be shipped off, since the bench for any team in the luxury-tax age can only be so expensive. Wallace's bloated contract makes him virtually untradeable, and Hinrich should also be virtually untradeable since he is the one Bull who hasn't missed a step in Chicago, despite constant shifts between both guard spots. It is unfortunate that it seems inevitable that the Bulls will have to lose either Deng, Gordon or Nocioni in order to take their team to the next level, because all three are special talents in their own right and are almost guaranteed to improve whatever team they wind up on, but such are the sacrifices a legit contender has to make on their way if they want to take advantage of the very small window of opportunity that exists for title-vying teams. Consider Phoenix trading Johnson and Quentin Richardson, or the Mavericks trading Antawn Jamison, or the Heat trading…you get the idea. There are other teams who find themselves in similar situations, too, as the Celtics and the Bulls. The Hawks will have to decide soon how the playing time will be divvyed out among Josh Smith, Josh Childress, Marvin Williams and Shelden Williams once all of those players are healthy. Nabbing any one could be a huge coup for a trading partner. As could landing one of Charlotte's plethora of forwards, although their backs aren't as against the wall since they still have oodles of cap space to use to fill their holes. Portland will almost assuredly deal Jamaal Magloire, ditto Seattle and Earl Watson. If New Jersey is serious about making another title run with Jason Kidd on their roster, they need a post-presence beyond Mikki Moore and Josh Boone, and it could wind up costing them the rest of Vince Carter's year in Jersey. But now I'm verging into exactly the kind of mindless supposing that I wanted to avoid. No matter how this all shakes out, this looks like one of the finest crops of players available for trade in a good long while. We're not talking about head-cases or malcontents, nor are we discussing guys who've seen their futures ravaged by injuries or buried under overbearing contracts. No, these are just good players who may have to moved for the sake progress, pure and simple. It's going to be a very merry Christmas indeed for some lucky GM's this year, now to figure out who's been naughty or nice.
