Gary Payton's court date postponed
Boston Celtics guard Gary Payton's scheduled court appearance in Toronto Monday was postponed until Tuesday. Payton faces assault charges dating back to an April 2003 incident at a strip club.
Payton, along with then teammates Sam Cassell and Jason Caffey, were charged following an altercation with a dancer, her husband and a security guard on duty at the strip club. The trio, who were playing for the Milwaukee Bucks at the time, were in Toronto for a game against the Toronto Raptors at the time of the incident.
Payton is charged with one count of aggravated assault causing bodily harm and two counts of simple assault. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Cassell, who now plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, faces two counts of simple assault while Caffey, a free agent, faces one count of simple assault. They could each face up to 18-months in prison if convicted.
Four days had been set aside in Toronto for the case, July 4, 6, 7 and 8.
